Kathmandu: Pakistan, Nepal, on Monday agreed to strengthen their bilateral relations, and decided to continue the promotion of trade and economy, and people to people, defense and cultural relations.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, who arrived here Monday morning, Minister of the Nepalese Prime Minister Kumar Nepal Madev at home, Prime Minister and discussed various aspects of bilateral relations.
This is the second meeting between the prime ministers of both countries, earlier during their meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh al-Balah last July.
The Prime Minister Gilani on the need to translate the friendly relations to the strong ties of friendship between the two countries.
Gilani said Pakistan greatly values its relations with Nepal, and relations based on mutual respect and mutual trust and shared perceptions on regional and international issues.
Prime Minister Gilani also expressed his condolences over the death of former Prime Minister of Nepal GP Koirala, who died in March of this year.
He stressed the need to expand the high-level exchanges between Pakistan and Nepal.
He said there should be more parliamentary exchanges and relations, people to people contacts on a regular basis to add new momentum to stimulate and increase the friendly list.
Prime Minister Gilani, “We need to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the areas identified in the roadmap to ensure the continuation of our partnership in achieving peace and security in our region and internationally.”
The Prime Minister told his Nepalese counterpart that Pakistan ended projects Rs. 13170000 for development in different sectors of Nepal under the Special Assistance Programme of South Asia (SAPSA) in fiscal year 2009-10.
In this program, the Prime Minister of Pakistan provided 29 scholarships in the last year and this number will be more in the future.
Increase scholarships for master’s degree courses in the media and explained that the aid includes a grant from the ambulances, and the openings of the Nepalese trainees in various fields.
Referring to the bilateral trade, Prime Minister Gilani said that trade and economic relations were not truly reflect the potential that existed in both countries.
He said: “We need to find ways and means of strengthening economic and trade ties.”
Prime Minister also suggested that joint efforts to strengthen cooperation in the areas of health and human resources development, agriculture and the establishment of joint projects in sectors such as textiles and pharmaceuticals.
In addition to highlighting the importance of free trade agreement between the two countries, said the proposal to start negotiations on a bilateral investment treaty between the two countries currently under consideration by the Government of Nepal and stressed the need to expedite the process.
He said that efforts should be made to put the finishing touches on a preferential trade agreement between the two countries to increase trade volume.
He said the Joint Economic Committee which was established in 1983, he met with so far only five times and the last meeting held in March 2005.
He said: “We must re-activate this forum to identify new areas of possible cooperation, and to monitor progress in our trade and commercial relations.”
The Prime Minister stressed the need to take an early decision to conclude a treaty of extradition between the two countries, which is still pending with the Nepalese government since 2006.
With regard to defense cooperation between the two countries, and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers more assistance to Nepal. He said that Pakistan has been and will accommodate the officers of the armed forces of Nepal in its defense, and defense establishments training of production.
