Daily Dream Home – Island House

This stunning, almost transparent riverfront property was designed by Seoul-based studio Iroje KHM Architects. Created to be a place for recreation and contemplating while enjoying spectacular changes in the foliage across the river, the Island House displays a series of naturally lit living spaces on two levels gathered around a central courtyard overlooking the river. Spreading over 6,759 square feet of interior living, entertaining and relaxation spaces, the contemporary structure located in Gapyunggun, South Korea, exhibits a stylized imitation of the site’s contours.

Inside, double-height spaces and extensive use of glass visually welcome the nature inside, in a modern and customized interior arrangement. On the outside, leading up to the roof and offering direct access to the bedrooms, two staircases – one on each end of the house – offer dramatic views of the surroundings and the glazed interiors. Basing their design on the concept of “architectural nature”, the team of architects created a fascinating residence where even the swimming pool takes inspiration from the geometric shapes seen throughout the house.

Melted Aluminum Bounding With Burnt Wood – Hilla Shamia’s Wood Castings

Presenting a striking combination never seen before, these wood-casted pieces of furniture were created by designer Hilla Shamia. These Wood Castings promise a constant visual of the merger between two splendid materials – wood and aluminum. The reaction between hot aluminum and burnt wood creates a clear boundary between the two elements, combining them into a raw stand-still moment.

This allows the “negative factor of burnt wood” to become a focal point with a deep visual impact. When using this technique of combining aluminum and wood, there is only so much control, the small details being left to natural forces. Melted aluminum invaded every crack it could find, intimately bonding with the burnt wood. The original tree trunk keeps its shape, but it split between the elements composing the collection. A square silhouette gives off an artificial vibe, while protecting the material it is forever bound to.

Modern and youthful PS #1 Elementary School Aftercare design

The PS #1 Elementary School Aftercare in Santa Monica, California, stands as proof that educational buildings can display a modern and creative facade and contemporary interiors that help enhance the students’ creativity. Designed by john Friedman and Alice Kimm of JFAK Architects, the elementary school strives to connect all its elements in a unifying space. Placed between the school’s existing buildings and its sport facilities, the rather small building features an aftercare room on the first floor, where indoor activities - homework, crafts, cooking – were easily connected with the outdoor sport facilities – the basketball court, soccer field, and play yard.

A multitude of windows and skylights offer natural light and natural ventilation helps students concentrate. Spread over 3,500 square feet, the educational spaces and facilities consist of a new aftercare facility, kitchen, and classroom for Pluralistic School #1.  The second floor is occupied by a new classroom with mezzanine that captures the ocean breeze and offers a quiet west-oriented location away from the agitation of the sport courts. The exterior is clad in plaster and shiplapped cement board painted in a youthful combination of colors, creating an appealing structure.

Daily Dream Home – Altamira Residence

Built on a 20-acre property along California’s Palos Verdes Peninsula, this contemporary residence was designed to encompass memories and a brand new lifestyle for its inhabitants. Named the Altamira Residence, this intriguing new home reminds the family of childhood camping trips, family picnics, and romantic times spent on these grounds by the couple now owning the land.

Designed by Marmol Radziner, the single family house occupies 15,500 square feet and is divided in four volumes, each of them having a specific function – main living volume, study space, guest house and garage. The main living volume was partially buried in the site and the garage was built under, in order to reduce the disturbance to the site and also allow neighbors to enjoy views of the ocean. The strong and successful collaboration between client, architect and landscape designer resulted in the creation of a complete residential space, merging indoor and outdoor in a fascinating expression of modern architecture.

Historic Shingle-Style Loring House On Market For $4.1 Million

Listen up, class – it’s time for your regularly scheduled architecture lesson. Today we’ll be exploring an interesting little movement, and will take a look at a beautiful example of this architecture in Massachusetts.

Shingle Style Charles G Loring House Beverly MA

During the late 1800s, a revived interest in 17th century colonial architecture influenced the rise of a new design trend: shingle-style houses. These rustic-looking homes were a revolt against the popular Queen Anne style, with its busy spindle work and ornamented gables. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, shingle-style architecture “was characterized by a free-flowing, open plan and frequent interpenetrations between interior and exterior space… [while] the irregular elevation of the building convey[ed] a feeling of openness”.

Shingle Style Charles G Loring House Beverly MA

The shingled home shown here in Beverly, MA, “might well be the best of all the surviving shingle-style houses of the 1880s”, says author and scholar Vincent Scully. Known as The Loring House, the 8,500 square foot manse was designed by William Ralph Emerson for General Charles G. Loring and his wife, Mary, and was completed in 1884.

Now on the market for $4.1 million, this piece of architectural history is located just 30 minutes from Boston overlooking the Salem Sound. The interiors of the home showcase beautiful wood paneling, carved mantelpieces and banisters, and hardwood floors. Eleven bedrooms and eleven baths provide ample room for guests. A solarium, boating house, dining pergola, and a long, sandy beachfront provide extensive opportunities for entertainment.

Though the house is in need of some restoration, it has fantastic bones (to see photos of the property in all its furnished glory, visit The Loring House’s official website). With some conscientious work, the Loring House will continue to be a stunning example of shingle-style. Who knows, it may even spark a second revival!

Wayne’s World: Former Jacksonville Jaguars Owner Lists Luxury Home For Auction

He’s already sold the NFL franchise he owned for nearly two decades and now former Jaguars majority owner Wayne Weaver is parting ways with his longtime Jacksonville, FL estate. Weaver, who hawked the team to auto parts magnate Shahid Khan for a reported $760 million in late 2011, has enlisted Concierge Auctions to handle the sale of the oceanfront estate that was once rated the 5th-best home in Duval County by the Florida Times-Union. Previously listed for as much as $10 million, the 14,000-square-foot home will be sold at auction on May 24th, although it can be purchased prior to that date for a buy-it-now price of $5.5 million.

“We have purchased another home in Jacksonville, and it is time for our riverfront estate to be in the hands of a new family. Delores Barr Weaver custom-designed the house, and we made many wonderful memories there,” stated Weaver in a release. “I spent months researching Concierge before deciding to hire them. What ultimately made our decision is the fact that their team is innovative, sophisticated and skilled in dealing with premier luxury homes. We are confident that Concierge will effectively convey the qualities and values of these properties, and we trust that once interested buyers are able to experience them, the auction prices will be market-driven and fair.”

Built in 1996, the Weaver family estate sits on a lush 3.87-acre lot lined with ancient oaks and rolling greens, and includes 243 feet of private river frontage. The home itself includes a total of six bedrooms and nine bathrooms, and features such fine amenities as a banquet-sized formal dining room, wet bar with a wine cellar, media den, sauna, steam bath and indoor lanai pool. Connected to the main home via a breeze way is small summer cottage that offers one bedroom and one-and-a-half baths, while a carriage house, private dock with a gazebo, and a hoist and draft can also be found on the property.

And Wayne is not the only member of the Weaver clan that will be auctioning off their home in the coming days. His daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Weaver and Jim Sutton, have also decided to put their St. Augustine, FL estate up for bidding. Originally listed for $3 million, the custom-designed home can either be had for the buy-it-now price of $1.87 million or at auction on May 24th.

Located within the confines of Palencia, a luxe gated community built along the Intracoastal Waterway, Leigh Weaver’s estate measures some 5,700-square-feeet with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. Beyond its prime location, the home features two-story foyer, living and dining rooms that share a see-through fireplace, game room with a wet bar, and a pool.

Daily Dream Home – GM1 House

Colombian studio GM Architects made use of an extensive load of creativity when creating this luxurious villa named the GM1 House. This two-story contemporary residence in Girardot, Colombia, displays imposing design lines that seem to be folding on top of one another. Deep overhangs protect the glazed interiors from direct sunshine while beautifying the overall structure. A simple space arrangement including the volumetric architecture, a swimming pool right by the covered terrace and a simple landscaped garden compose the modern residential construction.

At night, illuminated by 12 piercing lights shining through floating stairs, cast interesting shadows on the white washed wall below. Next to the staircase, a strip of narrow wooden deck separates the house from the pool, creating a visual break between the garden and the house. The second floor offers views of the surroundings, either from behind the glazed wall or from the open-air terrace surrounding the interior spaces. Is this a house you would be proud to call home?

Subtly Displaying Subconscious Creativity – Doodle sofa

If you like to think of yourself as a creative person, then you know how important doodling is. It helps fight boredom while tapping into your subconscious creativity. Expressive and elegant at the same time, the Doodle sofa by Swedish design group Front encompasses that need for letting creative thoughts out and displays them out in the open, creating a textured piece of furniture in the precess.

Designed for Italian company Moroso, the intriguing sofa design was imagined as a collection of lines stamped into the folding design of the seating unit. Completely covered with creative outlets that the three members of Front doodled during design meetings, this modern sofa is an artistic interpretation of the team’s efforts: “The decoration is a kind of by-product of Front’s creative process, inscribed onto the folded half circle of the sofa’s form.” Scroll down to see how the pattern looked before applying it to the furniture and get a closer look at the details shaping an elegantly interesting design.

Pine-Inspired Borghese Sofa Displays a Playful Trio

When you have a modern, elegant home, the perfect sofa is hard to find – a piece of furniture that can evoke a feeling and offer a creative alternative to inexpressive sofa models on the market. The Borghese Sofa was created by Noé Duchaufour Lawrance to be differentiated from the others in a subtle, elegant way. This furniture jewel designed for La Chance is lightly constructed to offer an artistic view – you can guess the curves shaping tree crowns when the sofa is unoccupied, but once you turn it around, there is no doubt that this piece of furniture creates a stylized landscape.

Inspired by the stone pines of the Villa Borghèse in Rome, which also led to the creation of  the “Pines of Rome” symphonic poem, this sofa captures the essence of a natural element in a unique man-made design. Its backrest shapes the image of three pines, with the metal legs and support structure acting as the trunks and branches – solid yet fluid – and the seating area and backrest pieces shaping a playful trio. How can that not be beautiful?
